This weekend I tackled one more project in Ellie’s never-ending-bedroom-re-design. Recently, I posted about some talented DIY’ers who painted an inexpensive ($40) rug from Ikea. My sister picked one up for me and it has sat for a few weeks while I debated on trying to tackle such a project. I even contemplated breaking down and spending $300 plus for a brand new rug. But quickly realized that would be foolish to not even give it a try. So try I did!
Here is the rug that I fell in love with from Serena and Lily….perfect color, design, material, everything, except for the price….$395…….eek!
I thought I would try to do a very modified version of this rug…no center medallion and keep my border more simple.
Here she is.
What do you think?? Not perfect, but close enough.
I used leftover wall paint (BM Gray Pelican) and added white to lighten it. I wanted to keep my costs as low as possible in case it didn’t turn out so good and went out with Tuesday’s trash.
First I taped off the border…
Then I made a template by tracing a lid and folding the circle in half…
Last, I moved the template by 1″ to keep it consistent with the rest of the border. This is where I had to “eye-ball” it. After all, what would a DIY project be without eye-balling, right?!?!
It really was quite easy and in total I spent about 3 1/2 hours on it. For me, the trickiest part was getting the paint into all of the “grooves” of the rug. Mine is a little splotchy, but all in all I’m happy with it and happy with the savings!!!
Hope your week gets off to a great start.
In this month’s issue of Traditional Home, they featured the rug company, Custom Cool Rugs, new store in Long Island. The pictures of the adorable storefront were not available on their site, but thought you might like to see their colorful and oh, so beautiful rugs and pillows.
I’ve been working on a few projects that have allowed me to incorporate some fun colors into the designs. Are you finding yourself adding more color to your home?
And here is the owner of Custom Cool Rugs and textile designer, Eliza Gatfield’s, home which was featured in Traditional Home in 2009. Here she used a variety of wallpapers to line the back of the cabinet. So pretty. I love how she mixes patterns throughout her home.
Do you have any fun weekend projects planned? Please share!
Hope you have a great weekend.
A couple of weeks ago I showed you the basket that I turned into filing storage. Since January, as time has allowed, I have been working on organizing my office space. I started by getting rid of old fabric samples and reorganizing the ones that I wanted to keep. I ordered 8 of these locker baskets to help out with this problem and they have worked out really well. Here is my progress so far….
I started with the Expedit shelving unit that I purchased from Ikea a couple of years ago, but until recently, never took the time organizing it and using it to it’s fullest potential. Now, I think this thing is worth it’s weight in gold! The filing basket stores old files and freed up space in my desk filing cabinet. But the hardest part was weeding out the old magazines! This is just a portion of the magazines….there are lots more in the living room. Why is it so hard to part with magazines? Of course, The Cottage Living ones aren’t going anywhere.
It’s amazing how a little organization can make life easier. I just noticed that I did not label each basket by fabric colors. Oops. My next goal is to show you the entire space, so that means I need to get working on my desk, but you guys are good motivators.
Right now, I can’t even find a pencil.

I recently started working with a client on her master bedroom and master bathroom remodel. We spent the morning looking at tiles and beautiful rugs. Since there is a chance they may have to relocate in the future, I am putting the emphasis of the design budget on things that she can take with her if she does have to move. We selected 2 hand-knotted Persian rug options, one of which will be the foundation of the design for the bathroom and the color palate for the bedroom.
This will be a tough decision!
Notice the short fringe on the rugs. The store owner told us that people are bringing in their old rugs and having them sheer down the long fringe to the more update short fringe. What a great idea.

While I was on the Ballard’s website, I came across a contest they have going on. Have you heard about this? If you pin 4 furniture items under $1,000 to a “Pin it and Win it” board under your Pinterest account, you will be entered into the $1,000 merchandise giveaway. Sounds fun! Here are the rules and how to enter. (I’m not getting paid to promote this, I promise!)
One of my favorite, go-to sources for rugs is Dash and Albert. They are known for their colorful, casual rugs and their great indoor/outdoor rugs. Last week I was on their site searching for rugs and discovered their new striped indoor/outdoor rugs. I’m loving them! Here are a few of my favorites.
Another favorite pattern is their diamond rug. I love this new color they added and so do a lot of other people…this rug is backordered until May…every size!
The best part about these rugs is their durability….scrubbable and bleachable. How’s that for kid-friendly and pet-friendly?!?!
Hope your week gets off to a great start.
